On November 18, the first satellite Nuclear Policy Working Group started at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. There were 23 Spartans at this very first meeting! MSU is the home of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), a world class nuclear science facility and the future home of the new Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), a next generation facility. These nuclear scientists, as well as some physicists, met with many undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty members from MSU’s James Madison College to make this a truly interdisciplinary group. James Madison College is MSU’s college of public affairs and international relations. The first interactive seminar focused on some of the basics of arms control. This short seminar was followed by an engaging discussion on a variety of nuclear security issues, including many that will be included in future interactive seminars. Our next seminar will focus on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The NPWG@MSU is looking forward to collaborating with the NPWG at UC Berkeley to work towards solutions to nuclear security issues.
